Dear Friends of Sunnyvale School District,

The Sunnyvale School District Board of Education and I would like to invite you to an informative meeting about a potential upcoming Sunnyvale School District facility bond.  You are receiving this invitation because of your interest, support and service to your school and Sunnyvale School District.

When:      Monday, April 8th
Time:        6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Where:     Sunnyvale School District Office
   Board of Education Room
   819 W Iowa Avenue

As you may know, in November of 2004, voters in Sunnyvale School District approved Measure P, a $120 million school bond to modernize, expand and maintain our ten schools.  Since that time the District has worked to improve all of the schools.  The District has added 41 new classrooms to accommodate increasing enrollment and many schools have been modernized.  We have replaced sewer, water and gas lines, upgraded energy efficiency through improved heating, plumbing and ventilation systems, replaced single pane windows and added solar systems to reduce energy consumption and costs to be environmentally responsible.

We have also supported technology by installing computer labs wireless network and cabling infrastructure.  Classroom have been renovated, libraries updated or built, restrooms added, expanded school offices and student support areas and expanded parking and drop off areas for student safety.

But as you may imagine, there is more work to be completed.  Four schools have not been fully modernized to the standards established by the Board of Education.  Bishop, Cherry Chase, Ellis and Sunnyvale Middle School need to be renovated to provide up to date classrooms, replace 50 year old underground water, sewer, and gas lines, and replace old inefficient electrical, lighting, heating, plumbing and ventilation systems.

In addition, all schools including the six other schools in the District, Cumberland, Fairwood, Lakewood, San Miguel, Vargas and Columbia Middle School are in need of updated instructional technology as well ongoing repairs and renovations to keep the schools modern, safe and secure.  We also need to reduce our reliance on the use of portable classrooms.

It is for all of these reasons the District is considering placing a general obligation school bond before voters on November 5, 2013.  I hope you can join us on the evening to learn about this initiative and how you might be able to help us prepare our schools for the years ahead…and feel free to share this invitation with other interested parents.

Warm regards,

Benjamin H. Picard, Ed.D.
