PTA Legislative Round Table

Please Join Us
Sixth District PTA Legislative Round Table
Thursday, November 12
7:00 to 8:30 pm

This year's Legislative Round Table will explore three topics:
  • Adequate Funding: Even with the Prop 30 taxes, our funding is below average, and California's schools rank in the bottom 5. And those begin to expire in 2016! How can we restore long-term increased stable funding for our children's schools?
No great economy ever grew by disinvesting in education.
-- Delaine Eastin, former State Superintendent of Public Instruction
  • Investing in Early Childhood Education: $1 invested in early education saves $4 -$9 later. How can we increase accesss to high quality, affordable, early learning?
Children who enter school with poor academic skills rarely catch up; performance in the early years of school is highly predictive of achievement much later.
-- Deborah Stipek, Judy Koch Professor of Education, Stanford
  • Childhood Hunger in Santa Clara County: 1 out of every 3 children in Santa Clara County goes to bed hungry every night. How can we address this dilemma, in the heart of one of the wealthiest areas in the entire country?
One out of three children in Silicon Valley suffers from hunger.
    -- Second Harvest Food Bank

Challenge Success - Parent Ed Opportunity!

Dear Parent Leaders,

We invite you and your school community to join us for the upcoming Challenge Success parent education event on Friday, September 26th, at Stanford University.

Challenge Success was founded 11 years ago at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Every day, we provide families and schools with the practical, research-based tools they need to raise healthy, motivated kids. We believe that our society has become too focused on grades, test scores and performance, leaving little time and energy for our kids to become resilient, successful, meaningful contributors for the 21st century.

Our annual school conference kicks-off on September 26th with “Success By Design: Is It Possible?” — a parent education event that is open to the public.Keynote speakers for the evening include Wendy Mogel (New York Times bestselling author) and Dave Evans (Lecturer at the Stanford Product Design Program and Co-Founder of Electronic Arts). They will be joined by Challenge Success Co-Founders, Dr. Denise Pope and Dr. Madeline Levine, for an interactive discussion about the meaning of success: What are the common beliefs about success we convey to kids in our overly scheduled and competitive society? What are the assumptions and misperceptions behind these beliefs? How can parents and educators help students design their own unique and authentic paths to success?

Success
By Design: Is It Possible?
Friday, September 26th, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Memorial Auditorium, Stanford University
